Progress...

So, by now you've read that we bought a new building!

Flash forward  to 1 year later. Yes, I said  1 year later. It's a little nutty. It did really take 1 year to finally get everything approved.  Design (multiples) Plans (multiples), Permits (LOTS)  and the City...Well almost...

DEMO...

Because the building is along the streetcar line and has a functioning alley out back, the city gave us a NO GO on putting a dumpster anywhere for demolition.. No chute/nothing.. SO how do you get old timber, drywall, plaster etc.. out of a 4 story building? Truck it down in bags using an elevator.. Painful - but they did it!

EGRESS THEN AND NOW...

Building codes have changed a bit since 1870, so the city has required us to have 2 forms of Egress (exit) in case there was a fire.

Having a fire once before at our current studio years ago (a moment I'd never like to relive nor would wish on anyone)  I understood, the importance of proper safety if there ever was a fire. By code we have to have 2 forms of exit if there ever was a fire. So bye bye old, beautiful hand plained stairs and hello cinderblock stair tower.  (don't worry you know I saved some of those stair treads - HELLO SURFACE!!!) We are still fussing with the city on the fire escape out the back of the building - it will all work out, but it's a long um... process....

As of next week, the stair tower and steel stairs will be complete and that means the Urban Sites team will be moving along to framing..

I've attached some pics of the current state.

Next post... Layouts.. and all the pretty things..
